Hernando Landmark Gone – Papa Joes Burns Down…
Papa Joe’s Italian Restaurant, a Hernando County icon and landmark for more then 32 years has burned down. The restaurant was engulfed in flames with thick smoke and deemed unsafe to enter when firefighters responded around 3 a.m.. The building, at 6244 Spring Lake Highway, was believed to be unoccupied, Hernando County Fire Rescue said.
Officials are investigating the cause of the fire. No other buildings were affected, fire officials said. Italian immigrant Joe Giarratana and his wife, Donna, opened Papa Joe’s in 1981, and it soon became a hometown favorite among residents and visitors. Papa Joe’s has hosted everything from community club lunches to class reunions and even wedding proposals. The restaurant is also known for supporting and assisting charities and events, and the Giarratanas host a weekly cooking show, “Loving Food”that can be seen online and on local cable television.
